Jose Mourinho confirms Matteo Darmian wants to leave Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Matteo Darmian wants to leave Manchester United this summer and he will be sold if an acceptable offer comes in for his services.

Darmian’s current contract expires at the end of the upcoming season but it’s likely that Man United will cash in on him over the next month amid interest in a return to Serie A.

Champions Juventus, Napoli and Internazionale are thought to be interested in signing the 28-year-old before the overseas transfer window slams shut on August 31 and the former have already had a bid worth up to €15m rejected.

Following United’s penalty shoot-out win against AC Milan in the International Champions Cup at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles, Mourinho revealed his decision to make Darmian captain for the outing was a sentimental one.

“The captaincy? Because he is a fantastic guy in my two years and with Mr Van Gaal before me,” Mourinho said. “He is the kind of guy who is always ready to give what he has, he grew up in AC Milan and to play against his child club and be captain in a friendly has a nice meaning.”

The United manager went on to confirm reports that Darmian wants out of Old Trafford.

“Matteo wants to leave and I think when a player wants to leave, if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct but not at any price. And, until now, the offers we got for Matteo are not even close to being accepted.”

Antonio Valencia‘s calf injury suffered against San Jose Earthquakes could make the situation difficult though, with Darmian’s exit risking a shortage of right-backs.

The new United captain has left the pre-season tour of the United States for treatment and will now miss the Premier League opener against Leicester City at Old Trafford on August 10.

New £19m signing Diogo Dalot is still recovering from injury and isn’t expected to be fully fit until September at the earliest, and now Mourinho is pondering his options.

“Valencia is injured, you are right,” Mourinho added. “And he will be injured for the beginning of the Premier League, Diogo Dalot is also in a recovering phase, he will not be ready for beginning of Premier League.

“Victor Lindelof is a possibility, he is not a right-back but is a possibility, he starts training next Monday. I will send people to Manchester to train with Victor, it makes no sense for him to come to the United States.”

First-choice left-back Ashley Young is still on holiday after his contribution to England’s World Cup run in which Gareth Southgate’s side reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1966.

Ashley Young is a possibility to play right-back, but is on holiday. I don’t know if he fancies to be back for that and put himself to be available for the team or stay on holiday.

“So if Matteo leaves he leaves because the right offer arrives and if he stays, yes you are right, he can be important for us.”

There is bound to be developments over the coming weeks over this one, but hopefully a deal for Darmian to return to Italy can be completed.
