Manchester United reportedly remain in advanced talks with Tottenham Hotspur over the transfer of Toby Alderweireld, despite the club’s concrete interest in Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire.
Reports emerged yesterday that Man United value Maguire at £60m and have approached Leicester over the possibility of a deal in the last two weeks of summer transfer window.
Alderwerield’s Tottenham career has turned sour and he missed a large chunk of the latter stages of the 2018-19 season, making him the perfect target for Jose Mourinho who needs an experienced option in the centre of defence.
The Manchester Evening News report that United put a £55 million offer on the table for Spurs to consider back in May with the idea of completing a deal before the 2018 World Cup begun in Russia a month later.
Spurs held out for a higher fee though and now the MEN claim that the two clubs are just £10m apart on the Belgium international’s valuation and any deal is likely to be straight up cash rather than a player swap involving wantaway forward Anthony Martial.
With the transfer window slowly coming to a close, Spurs will be eager to sell Alderweireld on considering he’ll be able to leave for just £25m next summer due to a clause in his contract.
United should have themselves a new centre-half before the new season gets underway.
