Jose Mourinho has laid down a challenge to wantaway Manchester United forward Anthony Martial after he left the pre-season tour of the United States for the birth of his second child.
Martial started Man United’s first two pre-season friendlies against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes before flying to Paris on Wednesday to be with his pregnant partner Melanie da Cruz.
Mourinho has previously stated that he gave the 22-year-old permission to leave United’s UCLA training camp, but has now publicly expressed his confusion as to why he is yet to return Stateside.
On MUTV following United’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool, Mourinho said: “Martial had a beautiful child and it’s healthy thank God, but he should be here now to help the team and he’s not here.”
It sounds like the manager expected Martial to return after the birth, however, now reports over the past week suggesting the young forward doesn’t plan on returning to the tour of America could actually be true.
The France international’s relationship with Mourinho turned sour midway through the 2017-18 season after Alexis Sanchez joined from Arsenal in the January transfer window, despite Martial having a fine season.
This saga looks set to run until the end of the transfer window, but it’s beginning to look increasingly likely a transfer away from the club will go through.
