Nemanja Matic undergoes surgery on abdominal injury

Manchester United have confirmed that Nemanja Matic has undergone surgery on an abdominal injury sustained whilst representing Serbia at the 2018 World Cup.

Matic as an ever-present figure but couldn’t help his nation exit a tough Group E including Brazil and Switzerland at the summer tournament in Russia, and arrived to Man United’s pre-season tour of the United States in poor condition.

It is understood that the 29-year-old has flown back to Manchester to begin his road to recovery, but there’s no questioning whether he’ll once again play a key part throughout the upcoming season.

Mourinho revealed the blow to MUTV after United’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in Michigan on Sunday night: “Matic has had surgery. Yes, of course [he is out for the start of the season]. I don’t know how long he will be out for.”

The United boss reunited with Matic last summer by signing him from Chelsea for £40m and used him for the vast majority of the campaign, including in 36 of the club’s 38 Premier League matches.

Matic joins Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo and the batch of players still on their holidays following their World Cup exploits, so the squad could be pretty thin by the time the Premier League opener against Leicester City roles around.

Let’s hope we see at least one new arrival before the transfer window slams shut – maybe that will halt the amount of negativity flowing around the club at the moment!
