Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell has ruled out team-mate Harry Maguire leaving the club for Manchester United in the January transfer window.
Maguire was one of Man United’s top summer transfer targets and he was hoping a move to Old Trafford would materialise, but Leicester’s £75m valuation ultimately ended any chances of a deal being agreed.
Jose Mourinho is still eyeing central defensive reinforcements and is likely to instruct the board to go after Maguire again in the coming transfer windows, but it doesn’t look like a transfer will happen in January.
Speaking after United defeated Leicester 2-1 at Old Trafford in the 2018-19 Premier League curtain-raiser, Chilwell insisted: “He is a Leicester player, he wants to play for Leicester. He has made that clear to all of us. He is going to be here for the whole season.”
Interest in Maguire’s services heated up after the 25-year-old’s impressive performances for England at the 2018 World Cup in Russia but any club would have scorned at the price put on his head.
United now have five main centre-back options for the new campaign – Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo – which should be enough to maintain a respectable defensive record once again.
David de Gea always plays a huge part in the impressive defensive records though, so expect a new central defender to arrive sooner rather than later in Mourinho’s reign as boss.
