David de Gea expected to sign new contract with Manchester United – report

Manchester United expect David de Gea to commit his long term future to the club after Thibaut Courtois joined Real Madrid, according to reports.

The Spaniard was on the verge of joining Real in 2015 only for the move to be thwarted by a documentation error, prompting him to sign a new deal at Old Trafford instead.

He has since courted interest from Los Blancos in numerous transfer windows but the arrival of Courtois last week shows Florentino Perez has abandoned his pursuit of De Gea.

And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, the club expect the Spaniard, who claimed the ‘Golden Glove’ award last season and was voted the club’s best player for the fourth time in five years, to sign a new contract at Old Trafford this season.

De Gea’s contract technically expires at the end of the current campaign but the club has an option to extend his deal until 2020. But supporters will want Ed Woodward to do more than that.

This is a player who now feels like an integral part of the club’s fabric. Bit by bit, he is moulding into one of the classic United players of the modern era. A juicy five year contract would be welcomed from all corners of the fanbase.
