Luke Shaw: This will be my season at Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Luke Shaw believes the 2018/19 campaign will be the season where he finally comes alive at Manchester United.

The club’s refusal to reinforce the left-back area over the summer has given Shaw, who has never truly settled at Old Trafford, an unexpected chance to assert himself on Jose Mourinho’s team.

He produced a ‘Man of the Match’ display during the 2-1 win over Leicester City, scoring Man United’s second of the evening and the first of his senior career.

Speaking to Premier League World, Shaw made note of how a mixture missing the World Cup, getting the backing of Mourinho, and a week in Dubai in the summer has put him in contention to have his best season yet at Old Trafford.

“Mentally, over the summer, it was quite hard,” he said. “I really wanted to be at the World Cup and it pushed me on even more during pre-season.”

“Back in the second season with [Louis] van Gaal, I did a trip to Dubai and came back feeling really good. It’s similar to this time. I did it again.

“I’ve come back really fit, ready to go, and I think this is my season hopefully.”

Mourinho would have surely wanted a new left-back to come in over the summer but the club gave up on emboldening that area as early as June, giving Shaw his best – and certainly final – chance to impose himself on the club.

He has looked fiercely determined since returning to action over the summer. And with Ashley Young, now 33, set to miss games throughout the campaign through either fatigue or injury, Shaw has to enter this new campaign believing things will be different this time around. They will simply have to be if he is to receive a new contract at the club in June.
