How Manchester City’s dressing room reacted to defeat to Manchester United in April

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester City’s dressing room was plunged into a state of fury and disbelief after surrendering a two goal advantage and the chance to seal the title against Manchester United back in April.

Pep Guardiola’s men looked to have won the title at home to their biggest rivals following a rampant first half in which Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan gave the hosts, who should have scored about five, complete control against a hapless Man United.

But something inexplicably changed for the visitors after the break. Led by Paul Pogba, who brought United level with two brilliantly taken goals in less than three minutes, they spoiled what would have been City’s greatest day since first winning the league in 2012, with Chris Smalling heading home the winner.

Thankfully, Amazon Prime happened to be filming the champions throughout the 2017/18 season, and therefore grabbed footage of an exasperated dressing room at full time. Here is the full transcript:

Fabian Delph (off camera): “F****** s*** man, f**** sake. F****** useless. F*** me. F****** hell.”

Vincent Kompany: “If I wanna see this team go to the next level, and do even more, every single detail we need to be honest with ourselves and be hard with ourselves.”

Yara Toure: “‘I think the point of what I’m saying right now is that it’s true because in the first half we were there, but in the second half they took us physically. Because, I think we have to understand sometimes, because we’re fatigued and that’s the time we need to regroup.”

Delph: “‘F****** tired? It’s simple, it’s straightforward. We stopped f****** running in the second-half.”

Pep Guardiola: “Guys. Chill out. Shut up please. No because you, because you, because you. If you disagree, complain to me for my decisions. When you lose in football, you think, we didn’t run. That is b*******, guys. That is not the point.”
