Roberto Martinez: Maybe Romelu Lukaku will change his mind

by Marwan Harraz

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has addressed Romelu Lukaku’s claims of retirement from international football, stating the player may change his mind in the future.

The striker had shockingly revealed his desire to retire after the 2020 Euro’s despite still having plenty of gas left in the tank.

Lukaku spoke about how he’s not worried because the next generation of Belgian players are talented and can continue to take the team forward.

The Manchester United star was his nation’s first choice striker during this summer’s edition of the World Cup as he lead his country to a third placed finish.

Martinez though isn’t as worried as the supporters are, believing Romelu may end up changing his mind further down the line.

According to Sport Witness, Roberto said to De Standaard: “I think I understand Romelu. He sets himself a goal in the very short term. He wants to give the next two years everything.

“I am convinced that he now feels that’s true. But whether it will be so in two years? You know, he wants to win.”

If Lukaku is still at United at that time then the club would be getting the very best of his peak years.

However, it would be good for the powerful forward to potentially win a trophy on the international stage.

That kind of experience is priceless and club teammate Paul Pogba would certainly vouch for that after winning the World Cup with France.

Either way, time will tell whether Romelu will actually retire from international football or not by then.
