Anthony Martial to sign new five-year contract in belief he can outlast Jose Mourinho – report

Anthony Martial is set to agree a new five year contract with Manchester United in the belief that he can outlast Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, according to reports.

The Frenchman’s relationship with the manger has been fractured for some time. His agent intimated at the start of the summer that they had agreed to look for a deal elsewhere.

But Martial has nonetheless remained at the club, only to find himself met with the same cold rejection as last season, missing out on the 18-man squad which faced Tottenham Hotspur on Monday.

But according to an exclusive in the Times by Paul Hirst, Martial will nonetheless agree to a five-year contract tabled by Ed Woodward, who is adamant on keeping him at Old Trafford, due to a belief that Mourinho will be dismissed from his position at Old Trafford sooner rather than later.

The 55-year-old finds himself under enormous pressure having lost two of his opening three Premier League games – a first for him and the first time it has happened at United since 1992. Defeat to Burnley would force Woodward and the board – currently reluctant to sack the boss – to seriously consider other options.

Even so, the dye appears to have been cast already. United have entered a decline on the pitch ever since Mourinho dropped Martial in favour of new signing Alexis Sanchez in January. It feels like only a matter of time before the results and performances become too bad to justify.

Martial will, no doubt, lick his lips at the prospect of playing under Zinedine Zidane.
