Jose Mourinho “happy” with Anthony Martial’s contract extension at Manchester United – report

Jose Mourinho is “happy” with Anthony Martial‘s decision to enter negotiations with Manchester United over a new five year contract, according to reports.

Reports from several major media outlets claimed yesterday that the Frenchman, who has a fractured relationship with Mourinho, had begun talks with the club regarding a new deal.

Many have inferred that Ed Woodward’s decision to keep Martial at the club was indicative of Mourinho’s waning influence at Old Trafford, with his position under severe threat following consecutive Premier League defeats.

But according to the Mirror‘s Matt Slater, Mourinho is in fact pleased with news of the 22-year-old deciding to commit his future at Old Trafford.

The idea that Mourinho has been defied by Woodward is fictitious. It was confirmed by the BBC that the manager, contrary to the belief of many, had in fact been kept in the loop regarding the new deal.

That Martial is indeed looking to extend his future is not indicative of the player being valued more than Mourinho. The situation is not that black and white.

However, you can only imagine Martial signing on the dotted line if he believed, at some point this season, that Mourinho would be dismissed from his post at Old Trafford – a consensus which seems to be forming in the dressing room.
