Luke Shaw has praised the influence of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho in helping him to regain his best form.
The left-back has had a rough two years at Old Trafford under Mourinho, never managing a sustained spell of games as the first-choice full-back for the Portuguese.
Now, though, he has earned the trust of Mourinho, and that too of England boss Gareth Southgate, who called Shaw back into the Three Lions squad for the first time in a while.
Many harangued Mourinho for his treatment of Shaw, which included frequent public critics, However, the player himself has come out to defend his manager and concede that Mourinho was in fact correct on most of what he has said in the past.
“Jose put his trust in to me at the start of this season and obviously at times, people thought he didn’t trust me,” said Shaw, to the BBC. “It would have been easy for him to say ‘I want to sell him, I don’t want him here anymore’, but I think he’s always believed in me.
“Of course you can see he’s played a big part, but I think I’ve done a lot as well to get back into his team and long may that continue.
“Every dream for every player is to one day become the best in their position. I’m nowhere near that and I have to keep striving for that. I’m at the best club for that.”
Everything Shaw said sums up a fantastic attitude to his own future at the club. During the summer and pre-season, the Englishman spoke of his desire to earn a new contract rather than be handed one solely to ensure his value remains high in case United wish to sell him.
That was a a time when it looked possible that Shaw would be sold next summer, with his contract running out then. Now, after a blistering start to the season, Shaw is in a good position.
He scored his first goal for the club against Leicester City, has been named Player of the Month for August and is back in the England squad.
United fans, and Shaw himself, can’t get ahead of themselves because e have seen good spells from Shaw before. The key for the young man is to continue this good form and maintain it throughout the season.
