Jose Mourinho hails Manchester United players’ mentality and desire in comeback win vs Newcastle

Jose Mourinho has hailed the attitude and passion seen from his Manchester United players in a sensational 3-2 comeback against Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

The Portuguese coach has been under huge pressure in the last few weeks and Mourinho was tipped for the sack by certain sections of the media on Friday evening.

It looked a significant possibility when Newcastle went 2-0 up at Old Trafford, but goals from Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez in the second-half completed an amazing match and a vital result for Mourinho.

The 55-year-old has criticised his players’ attitude on the pitch before, with the Reds having had lost three games already in the Premier League. This time, he was hugely complimentary of his squad.

“It was the mentality. It was the desire. It was the commitment,” Mourinho told BT Sport.

“As I used to say, nobody is important, only the club is important.

“This is not about me, this is not about the players, this is about the club.

“The players gave absolutely everything in the second half.”

It was a different side to this Manchester United team that was on show in the second half. Every player left everything on the pitch and that hasn’t been the case in any game so far this season.

All of United’s players have, at one time this season, had a poor attitude during games and looked like they’ve not been trying hard enough.

It was different after half-time against Newcastle when United threw everything at the visitors.
