Borussia Dortmund’s young defender Manuel Akanji has made clear his yearning to play for Manchester United at some point in the future.
Akanji explained that he has been a Man United fan since he was a child and that it would be a dream move if he were to sign for the Reds at some point in his career.
The 23-year-old has been at Dortmund since January after signing from Swiss Super League side FC Basel. Manager Lucian Favre has made Akanji a regular in his starting XI.
“Many know that Manchester United has been my favourite club since childhood,” Akanji explained to Bluewin.
“It would be nice to play there once. But that’s not an issue right now. I am very satisfied in Dortmund, I want to win BvB titles and compete with the Swiss national team in many more big tournaments.”
Akanji was an important part of the Switzerland squad as they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Russia in the summer. For Dortmund, meanwhile, his target of a title could come true as Favre’s side lead Bayern Munich in the title race by four points after winning five of their opening seven fixtures.
There are no reports that have suggested any interest from United at the moment, but Akanji is highly regarded in the German Bundesliga and an important part to the Dortmund side already.
A Swiss international, perhaps United may focus on bringing him to the club one day, but it seems unlikely at the moment.
