Ajax defender Matthijs de Light has played down talk of leaving Amsterdam amid rumours of Manchester United voicing their interest in his services.
The centre back made his debut for his boyhood club aged just 17 and impressed against Man United in the Europa League final back in 2017.
Reports have claimed that Jose Mourinho, who desperately wanted a central defender over the summer, has earmarked De Ligt as target for the next transfer window.
But De Ligt, asked whether he would prefer Barcelona or Man United, replied: “Ajax! The newspapers need to write something, it’s normal (the stories).”
And when pressed on which place he would rather visit on holiday – which feels a bit unfair, really – Ligt said: “Ha ha ha, Barcelona! I like the sun.”
De Ligt was starting European finals at the age of 17 – a stone cold indication that he will one day be the real deal, playing at the very highest level of European competition.
He is a shining example of the fruits delivered by Ajax’s famous academy and, for now, there is no temptation to go anywhere, especially with Eric ten Hag’s side playing in the Champions League and challenging PSV Eindhoven for top spot in the Eredivisie.
