Anthony Martial expected to sign new contract at Manchester United soon – report

Manchester United expect young forward Anthony Martial to accept a five-year contract extension with a substantial pay rise in the coming weeks.

The London Evening Standard report that there is confidence at Old Trafford that Martial will be one of a number of first-team players to commit their future to the club before the January transfer window.

The Frenchman is far from the only player whose future at Man United is under question. Figures like a goalkeeper David de Gea, full-back Luke Shaw, midfielders Juan Mata and Ander Herrera and others all have deals which expire at the end of the season. Contract negotiators at United are going to be busy over the next few weeks.

If players whose contracts run out at the end of the season do not sign a new deal by January, they are allowed to speak to other clubs and all other clubs are permitted to approach them about a free transfer.

Martial has not had the best of times on the current manager José Mourinho and it looks very likely that the 22-year-old would leave the club in the summer with interest from Juventus, Tottenham Hotspur and others.

However, he has been praised by Mourinho on a couple of occasions so far this season and has impressed with certain performances. His attitude was brought into question on a couple of times under Mourinho so far but Martial has been exemplary so far this season and now performances need to be consistently good if he is to have a long-term future at United.

It can only be seen as positives news that Martial is set to sign a new deal at the club. He’s an exciting forward even if he has not yet hit the potential that looked possible after netting 17 goals in his first season for the club as a teenager.
