Anthony Martial has revealed that he has never had a bad relationship with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.
It was long thought that the French forward and Mourinho had fallen out due to a lack of playing time for the 22-year-old and a bad attitude that infuriated Mourinho.
After Martial netted twice in the second half against Chelsea at the weekend to earn Man United a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, the pair embraced and laughed on the touchline. Such a sight has been relatively rare since Mourinho came in over two years ago.
Martial, though, has insisted that suggestions of tension between the two are ridiculous.
“Come on – things were not tense between us to begin with,” Martial said, as per the Manchester Evening News.
“We have a player-coach relationship and I hope that we will continue like that and bring Manchester United as much as possible.”
It’s good to hear and it’s the correct thing for Martial to say. While it has seemed as if his attitude has been off-colour at times, he never says a bad word in the media which is a huge positive for any player. That’s particularly true in the context of Paul Pogba’s situation at United.
Martial was superb against Chelsea. Both of his goals showed his typical ice cool composure and excellent finishing skills. His confidence after scoring the first goal and he’s now scored in three of his last four starts for the Reds.
Mourinho will hopefully now show some more faith in Martial as United host Juventus in the UEFA Champions League group stages on Tuesday night.
