Cristiano Ronaldo was an inspiration for me, reveals Manchester United striker Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has admitted that he looked up to Cristiano Ronaldo as a young footballer and has tried to learn from the former-Manchester United man.

Ronaldo makes his second comeback to Old Trafford on Tuesday night. The first time he returned to his old stomping ground was as a Real Madrid player in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League in 2013. This time, it’ll be in the group stages of the competition as a Juventus star.

Lukaku signed for Man United back in summer 2017 for around £75 million from Everton. He explained recently that games like the Juventus fixture are why he joined the Reds. It’ll be a fantastic atmosphere, and made even more so by the return of Ronaldo.

Asked about the Portuguese legend, Lukaku revealed that he looked up to Ronaldo.

“I’m 25 and grew up watching him [Ronaldo] play and improve and transform to the player he is,“ Lukaku told United’s official television channel, MUTV.

“So, for players of my generation and younger, we should look up to that and see what hard work can bring you.
“I watched the game the last time when he came here [for Real Madrid back in 2013]. He was really received like a legend is supposed to be.”

The noise levels in that game against Real Madrid was astonishing, partly due to the stature of the game but also because of Ronaldo.

Hopefully that will be the case again, to inspire the players, including Lukaku, to secure a win against a tough Juventus side.
