Leonardo Bonucci: I turned down a move to Manchester United this summer

Leonardo Bonucci has revealed that he turned down a move to Manchester United in the summer to re-join Juventus.

The two clubs face each other on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League group stages at Old Trafford. Bonucci will be an important player for the visitors, but could have just as easily been playing in the home dressing room.

Bonucci left AC Milan to sign for Juventus in the summer on a free transfer as the Serie A side desperately chase UEFA Champions League glory.

The Italian centre-back has been widely considered as one of the best in the world for some time. He also revealed he was chased by Man United’s local rivals Manchester City.

“Basically, there have been some possibilities both with Manchester City and with Manchester United,” Bonucci explained while talking to The Telegraph.

“This year when I was told there was a possibility to go back home, to come back to Juventus I just stopped listening to any other offers and I decided to come back here.

Asked to confirm that he had an offer from United and Jose Mourinho in the summer, Bonucci said, “Yes.”

Then asked by The Telegraph is there was any chance that he would take the United deal over re-joining Juventus, Bonucci said, “no.”

United have badly needed an experienced central defender in the mould of Bonucci. Their defensive displays this season have been woeful and it’s part of the reason that Jose Mourinho has set up his side in such a negative manner in a number of games.
