Neil Custis: Marcus Rashford to be handed chance up front at expense of Romelu Lukaku

Marcus Rashford will be handed a chance to impress up front at the expense of Romelu Lukaku amid a poor dry patch for the Belgian, according to journalist Neil Custis.

Lukaku has not scored a goal in eight games – his last at home coming all the way back in March – and drew intense criticism for his ineffective performance against Juventus.

Many supporters have demanded that the striker, deemed an ‘untouchable’ by Mourinho, loses his place in the starting XI.

And according to Custis, Mourinho has opted to do exactly that, and will use Rashford up front in an attempt to bolster his attack.

The crucial aspect to United’s attacking play is always the speed at which it happens. Sometimes, like against Juventus, it can feel disjointed, slow, predictable, going nowhere. And sometimes, like against Chelsea, it can feel sharp, quick, incisive, genuinely threatening.

Lukaku at the moment is slowing things down. He is missing big chances and not contributing to build up play in a meaningful way.

Using Rashford in that position would encourage United to make the pitch bigger and search for balls in behind – something they have desperately needed to do at times this season. He may not be the ‘answer’, per se, but to keep throwing Lukaku in the starting lineup in this kind of form would be insanity.
