Jose Mourinho singled out defender Victor Lindelof and striker Anthony Martial for praise after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea, it has been revealed.
The Reds were gutted to concede a 95th-minute equaliser against the West London club as Ross Barkley scored to force the share of the spoils at Stamford Bridge.
Martial had scored a double in the second half to put Man United in front after Antonio Rudiger’s early header for the hosts. Mourinho was delighted the young forward’s display, but also with the showing of Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.
The Sun reports that both players were singled out for ‘special praise’ after the draw and Mourinho wants to use the performance against Chelsea, who are firmly in the title race at the moment, as a benchmark for the rest of the campaign.
United were moments away from a brilliant victory that could have turned their season around. Instead, it was a slightly empty feeling coming away from the Bridge, a very difficult ground to travel to.
Mourinho then saw his team lose to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League and the manner of the performance was far less pleasing. He won’t have been praising Martial after that game because the Frenchman was poor and lost possession with far too great a frequency.
Lindelof, though, performed well in that game and was publicly hailed by Mourinho. It’s good to see the 24-year-old centre-back finally settling in at United.
