Juventus vs Manchester United: Three players who must start

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United face their toughest away game of the season so far as they travel to Turin for a meeting with Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Jose Mourinho’s team were totally outplayed by the Serie A champions at Old Trafford a fortnight ago, losing 1-0 following Paolo Dybala’s first half goal.

They will be expected to produce a lot more in a game which could decide whether or not they progress through to the knockout stages of the competition.

With that in mind, here are three players who Mourinho must start against Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

Victor Lindelof

The Swede was once again impressive at the back during Man United’s 2-1 win over AFC Bournemouth, using the ball nicely and generally maintaining a good position whenever the hosts came forward. He is visibly growing in stature as a United player; there is much less of a ‘rabbit in the headlights’ feel about him.

Mourinho has been unable to field the same centre back partnership for too long since joining United. He will certainly want to keep Lindelof and Chris Smalling together for a fifth consecutive game.

Jesse Lingard

Lingard returned to action against Bournemouth with a sprightly, driven attacking display which helped United maintain a high level of intensity towards the end of the game – something United have lacked at times in the Englishman’s absence.

Mourinho will, no doubt, look to hit Juventus on the break and central to that plan will be Lingard’s powerful running through the middle.

Ander Herrera

It was Herrera who Mourinho made a point of praising after Bournemouth, noting how the 29-year-old brought a renewed vigour to the performance which allowed United to win the ball back faster.

And against a Juventus team which dominated the middle at Old Trafford, their midfield three easily usurping Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, Mourinho will know that injecting Herrera’s tenacious influence is absolutely vital.
