Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan has opened up about how Sir Alex Ferguson’s speech to players after the dismissal of Jose Mourinho was “important”.

The former Man United boss played an important role in the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager after the club decided to dispense with Jose Mourinho.

He reportedly gave a speech to the dressing room, reminding them of their duties as United players, and even spoke individually to members of the squad in an attempt to restore confidence.

And Phelan, speaking in an interview with MUTV, was quick to make note of how important it was for Ferguson to address the players.

Perhaps we should not be surprised to see Ferguson, just six months on from undergoing serious brain surgery following a stroke, playing a key role in the resurrecting the mood of United’s dressing room following the torment of Jose Mourinho. You just cannot keep the man down.

He would have known that this team needed a few choice words to get the cogs firing again. They had stopped running for their predecessor, whose negativity broke their spirit.

The injection of Phelan’s familiarity, Solskjaer’s exuberance and, of course, the sheer presence of the Gaffer himself – who would have known exactly what to say to these players – has transformed the mood around this team.
