Benfica have reportedly dealt a blow to Manchester United in their race for Ruben Dias’ signature with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer perhaps forced into looking at alternatives.
The Portuguese is said to be on the Norwegian’s list as his release clause was believed to be on the more affordable side and he would add definite quality to the club’s leaky defence.
Solskjsaer was believed to be prioritising his full-back options but a centre-back signing has been needed for quite some time now.
Dias fits the club legend’s transfer policy given how he’s a young talent ready to grow into a top player if given the opportunity.
However, Ole may have to turn his attentions elsewhere as the Primeira Liga side have hatched a plan to make their star more expensive.
According to the Sun, Benfica are hoping to renew Ruben’s contract in order to push up his release clause from €66m to €88m, potentially ending the Red Devils’ interest.
Solskjaer has only spent around £15m so far but some reports have claimed he only has a £100m budget this summer, meaning spending big is not really an option.
The former striker was said to have been involved in the chase for Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire but both moves have failed thus far.
