Player ratings: Kristiansund 0-1 Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea N/A – Had nothing to do whatsoever.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – Another ice-cold defensive performance, once again giving his best Gandalf impression. Used the ball well. Defending against crosses at the back post could improve.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Brought the ball into midfield on a couple of occasions, serving as the extra man in midfield. Did not have much defending to do.

Phil Jones 6 – Not particularly elegant at times. Found himself out of position for a rare Kristiansund counter and somehow managed to handball his own overhead kick.

Luke Shaw 7 – Very encouraging display. Tidy on the ball and full of energy, causing the Norwegian side plenty of problems down the left.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Started the game too sloppy in possession once again but grew in stature as United’s collective movement became crisper.

Scott McTominay 7 – The best thing about this performance was the sheer confidence of it. Slammed a rocket of a shot against the post and his passing was so much more ambitious. Looks to be growing with every game.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Got into good positions, displaying the right kind of thrust, but without ever producing any final product at all. Annoying.

Daniel James 6 – Similar to Lingard although he was more inventive with his passing, and of course his pace is just ridiculous. Needs to be more arrogant at times.

Marcus Rashford 7 – United’s standout performer. Cut inside from the left-hand side ferociously, and played with his chest out (figuratively speaking). Always looked to fashion shots or assists for teammates, forcing the keeper into a pair of good saves.

Anthony Martial 6 – Certainly had his moments in that No.9 role. Close control around the box was superior to other attacking players out there and got some shots away. His energy going forward was good but the Frenchman’s movement on the ball whilst on the break can be better.
