Manchester United fans ecstatic after David de Gea signs new contract until 2023

Manchester United supporters have reacted with sheer delight after it was confirmed that David de Gea had signed a new contract at Old Trafford until 2023 with the option to extend for a further year.

The Spaniard famously came within minutes of completing a move to Real Madrid in 2015, only for the deal to fall through due to documentation errors, prompting De Gea to sign a new long-term contract at United.

With that contract set to expire next year, De Gea and United have been in negotiations regarding fresh terms for over a year.

After what has felt like forever, United fans were markedly ecstatic to see that their best player had committed his long-term future to the club.

How big is this?

I remember being at school – now three years ago – scrolling through my phone in lessons, seeing talk of a new De Gea contract, wondering, ‘will he really sign another long-term deal here?’.

De Gea could have gone to any club in the world. If he had really wanted, he could have made a move to Madrid happen. He could have joined Paris Saint-Germain or Juventus for nothing next summer.

Instead, he has decided to stay here, at this humungous and failing and truly bewildering football club. He is, without doubt, one of us.

An adopted Manc, United’s best player, the finest shot-stopper in the world. He deserves to be the highest-paid player in the world.
