Man United refuse Southampton loan offer for Brandon Williams

by Red Billy

It seemed almost inevitable that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would allow young full-back Brandon Williams to spend the rest of this season on loan at another club, but this now does not appear to be the case.
Williams has fallen way down Solskjaer’s pecking order and has started just two EFL games and made three other substitute appearances this season.
The 20-year-old’s natural position is right-back, but he has only played 31 minutes in that role despite the need to rest and rotate Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with Solskjaer preferring to turn to centre backs Axel Tuanzebe and Victor Lindelof recently when cover was needed.
This led pundits and journalists to speculate that Solskjaer has lost confidence in the England Under 21 international and a loan move to Southampton seemed to be on the cards.
But according to The Telegraph, Solskjaer has turned down Southampton’s approach and is determined to keep Williams at Old Trafford.
‘Manchester United have rebuffed an initial approach from Southampton to loan Brandon Williams, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitting he will not be pushing any of his fringe players out of the door this month given the importance of maintaining a big squad,’ reporter James Ducker writes.
‘United have not completely discounted the idea of allowing a player or two to leave on loan in the winter window.
‘But Solskjaer believes having a big squad will be more important than ever this season given that the congested schedule brought about by the Covid-19 crisis has increased the threat of injuries and fatigue and feels he is already reaping the benefits of regular rotation.’
Newcastle United are also believed to be interested in loaning Williams and other fringe players such as Dan James and Jesse Lingard are attracting attention as well. But it seems that Solskjaer is going to be reluctant to allow any of them to be loaned out at this stage.
