Manchester United great Dimitar Berbatov has explained why Jesse Lingard should be looking to move away from the club.
The academy graduate has had a torrid time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of late, hardly featuring at all and when he has played, he’s often disappointed.
Lingard got a rare start vs Watford and while he performed decently, it’s still difficult to imagine he has a future at the club.
He played well but not well enough to earn him any major plaudits and he would have had to have done much more to have been considered essential to the squad, let alone a starting XI player.
Lingard was once one of Solskjaer’s most regularly started players but his form got so poor in the last season that it became impossible not to drop him and then Bruno Fernandes was subsequently signed.
According to Manchester Evening News, Berbatov said: “Honestly, his time is up. He’s not playing. He had his chances to shine, to prove how good he is, how good he can be.
“It shows that, for the moment, Ole does not trust him enough to play him. And honestly he doesn’t have anywhere to play in the team right now.
“So when you’ve been so long in one team and, coming to 28, you have to look back and say: ‘Did I achieve enough? Am I happy with what I’ve done here? Is my time up?’
“So I think he needs to move, he needs to go somewhere else to play.
“It’s going to be a lesser team than United, but as long as he gets more playing time to get back to doing what he can do, because I remember him starting for England and scoring goals for England.
“But now that is all gone in my opinion and he needs to rediscover some of the form that he used to have before.”
Since Bruno’s arrival, Lingard’s hardly had a sniff of first-team action as they are direct competitors for the same position.
The Englishman’s versatility couldn’t even help him as Marcus Rashford has dominated the left-wing and Mason Greenwood for the large part has been on the right.
Reports had earlier emerged claiming Lingard wanted to move to get more first-team football but there doesn’t seem to be any obvious candidates at the moment.
